Two Golden Cords

by ~TerraForce

Two Golden Cords

They gave me two golden cords.

Tied up in them
are the sacrifices I made.
Everything I put aside,
so that I could do better.
All the friends I lost,
to give me a future.
All the status I left,
because I wasn’t popular.
That pain that I felt,
in a world not my home.

Others gave me flattery,
because I knew the answers.
Others promised me loyalty,
because I would not hurt them.

They pretended I meant something to them.
They gave me lies.

But they—
They gave me two golden cords
and four golden tassels.

Good to see an update from you Miles. I do hope your future experiences with higher education would be completely different. (in a bitter way of course)

I also hope you find more that are "true" in the future as well (something tells me a secular environment might house more "honest" individuals, when it comes to personality and interaction.) *shrugs* perhaps I'm just jaded on the subject.

Anywho, do take care.

Personally, you probably have a point there. UCSD is home to a much more relaxed environment, secular or no, thus placing less pressure on people to maintain certain illusions.

That being said, there will also be a lot fewer people in grad school who are there because their parents are compelling them or whatever, meaning that my classmates will be less likely to see me as someone they can merely use and more likely to see me as a colleague, an equal.

I really think it will be better all around. So I'm looking forward to it. :3

Wear them with pride. You earned them. Cherish them and know that years from now, you will look at them and all that was and occured will come back to you. How will you think of it then?

I'm pretty sure I'll still loathe it then.

As the poem sort of indirectly mentions, the cords are one of the few things I actually liked from the college. They couldn't keep me from earning them.

Other than that, it was largely an experience I am not pleased with.

I have a set of those in my room. I use them to strangle burglars.

...

I guess that's better than just dangling them from something or other.
